Patterson-UTI Energy Inc. on Thursday reported a fourth-quarter loss on a steep decline in sales from oil and gas drilling.

The company posted a quarterly loss of $18.2 million, or 12 cents per share, compared with a profit of $79.5 million, or 52 cents per share, in the same period of 2008. The 2009 period included a charge of 5 cents per share from retiring drilling assets. Excluding that, the company lost 7 cents per share in the latest quarter.

Revenue sank to $213.6 million from $531.5 million, partly due to a steep decline in oil prices compared with 2008.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters predicted a loss of 8 cents per share on revenue of $216.4 million. Analyst estimates typically exclude one-time items.

During the fourth quarter of 2009, the company had an average of 33 rigs operating under term contracts. Patterson-UPI expects to have an average of 42 rigs in 2010 and 26 rigs in 2011 operating under existing long-term contracts. [Read the full article]
