Capitol Report: Ten Trump goals and where they stand as he marks year one
President Donald Trump’s first year in office was described as a “disaster” in a recent poll of voters. But that’s not what his record shows — if measured by his own goals.
While there are several significant goals Trump has yet to make good on — building the border wall, for example — he has fulfilled his pledges on others, like enacting a major tax bill. Still other areas are mixed: Trump hasn’t gotten rid of Obamacare, but has instead chipped away at it by repealing the individual mandate.
“I would highlight three areas of accomplishment: judicial appointments, the tax overhaul, and deregulation,” said Alex Cynamon, deputy director of research at Height Securities. He added that Trump’s White House continues to “run into trouble” on its offshore drilling push, and noted an infrastructure plan has yet to be seen.
MarketWatch took 10 major Trump goals — some of which the president aimed for in his first 100 days — and gave each completed one 10 points. Those not completed get zero, and partially completed goals get 5.
Using that system, Trump gets 50%; better than the 41% he got when MarketWatch scored him on his first 100 days.
Trump marks his first year in office on Saturday with a low approval rating (39.4% in the latest RealClearPolitics average) and no shortage of criticism. “He promised to help regular Americans, and instead continues to try to roll back the regulations that would protect them, and forced a tax bill that advantages the wealthy still further,” said Lisa Gilbert, vice president of legislative affairs at the group Public Citizen.
Yet analysts say his accomplishments can’t be overlooked.
“Judges, regulations, taxes, Obamacare mandate, Alaska drilling — it’s all happening,” wrote Chris Krueger of Cowen Washington Research Group in a note summarizing Trump’s first year.
