Archaeologists make one of the biggest discoveries ever in Egypt

A huge discovery in an Egyptian slum is being called one of the most important discoveries ever.

Reuters reports a colossus, or giant statue, was found submerged in groundwater in a slum in Cairo, Egypt.

Archaeologists believe the statue is likely a representation of Pharaoh Ramses the second, one of the most famous pharaohs in history.

Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani says the statue is made of quartzite and that, so far, they have found several large fragments of the statue.

“Hopefully during the next few hours or maybe few days (we) will discover the other fragments and will be able to reconstruct this colossus of Ramses II in the Grand Egyptian Museum which will open during 2018,” the minister said.

Archaeologists say the location of the colossus to the sun temple in the ancient city of Heliopolis, which Ramses founded, provides further evidence that it represents him.

Egypt’s tourism industry has seen a decline since 2011 due to political unrest, so this archaeological find is a colossal deal!
