Jay Leno explores his 98-year old 1918 Stutz Bearcat
Jay Leno’s Garage not only features the Denim King driving custom-built cars, but also new and old classics, including vehicles from his collection. The latest episode of Leno’s internet show takes the title literally, with the host driving a 1918 Stutz Bearcat he personally owns.
The nearly-100-year-old convertible may seem familiar to diehard fans, as the antique was one of the first vehicles ever showcased on Leno’s series. Leno has owned the car for approximately 20 years and as he points out, the first 10 years or so with the car were frustrating as things continued to go wrong. The Bearcat has been restored three times, with the most recent work making the car reliable enough for Leno to drive regularly.
For a car that came out toward the end of Word War I, the Bearcat’s figures were pretty impressive. According to Leno, the car puts out roughly 80 horsepower and hit a top speed of 85 miles per hour. It’s daunting price tag of $ 2,500 when new dwarfed that of the Ford Model T, but was roughly two times faster than the Tin Lizzy. The most impressive part of the machine, though, is just how comfortable Leno looks when driving it. To get an in-depth look at the classic, check out the video above.
