NEW YORK (AP) -- A BMO Capital Markets analyst upgraded shares of Health Net Inc. Tuesday, saying he thinks the health insurer will regain at least part of the defense department business it lost last year.

Dave Shove raised his rating to "Market Perform" from "Underperform," saying Health Net could regain billions in business with the Pentagon's Tricare program or win a new contract. He said the Woodland Hills, Calif., company should get a decision on its appeal of the Tricare contract award by June 1.

The Tricare program provides insurance for military members and their families. In July, the Pentagon decided not to renew a contract with Health Net, awarding coverage of its Northern members to Aetna Inc. instead. The contract could be worth up to $16.68 billion over five years if all options are exercised. Health Net is appealing the decision. [Read the full article]

Health insurer Humana Inc. paid CEO Michael B. McCallister 26 percent more last year than in 2008, largely because of a $1.8 million performance-related bonus.

McCallister, 57, received compensation valued at $6.5 million for 2009, according to an Associated Press analysis of a proxy statement filed Tuesday.

That included a salary of about $1 million, the bonus and stock and options valued at $3.4 million when they were granted.

McCallister's compensation also included $164,380 for retirement savings, matching charitable contributions, insurance and other perquisites plus $132,848 worth of personal use of company aircraft. McCallister, who also serves as president, has been CEO since 2000. Humana is based in Louisville, Ky.

Humana's profit grew 61 percent in 2009 compared to 2008, when the company's performance investment income fell and claim expenses from its stand-alone Medicare prescription drug plans rose. [Read the full article]

An initiative designed to boost physician access in medically underserved areas rolled into Tampa. UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) and Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) said they are partnering to build a national telehealth network to give patients access to physicians and specialists when in-person visits are not possible. The program, Connected Care, combines audio and video technology and health resources to expand physicians’ reach into rural, urban and other underserved areas, a release said. Connected Care is built on an open network that integrates multiple vendors’ technologies with electronic health records and other IT platforms, the release said. To showcase the technology, UnitedHealthcare created an 18-wheel Connected Care mobile clinic that was in Tampa Wednesday.
