US SMALL/MIDCAPS-Federal Signal, energy weigh on stocks

Midcap and smallcap stocks slid Friday, as a weak earnings report from Federal Signal weighed on midcaps while smallcap energy stocks tumbled amid the continued spread of a massive oil spill in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

Federal Signal (FSS.N) lost 15.2 percent after the diversified manufacturer posted a surprise first-quarter loss, hurt by lower sales volumes and shipments. For details, see [ID:nSGE63R0FW]

Fellow midcap Digital River Inc (DRIV.O) slumped 11.4 percent to $27.71 after the e-commerce services provider posted first-quarter results that topped expectations but provided a second-quarter outlook that fell short of market expectations. [ID:nSGE63S0MY]
