The global automotive industry has all eyes on Detroit Monday, as the North American International Auto Show kicks into high gear. General Motors ( GM - news - people ) electric Chevrolet Volt won the top honors as North American Car of the Year, beating out the Nissan ( NSANY - news - people ) Leaf and the Hyundai Sonata for the title. The Volt already won Motor Trend Car of the year, among other honors. Ford Motor ( F - news - people )'s Ford Explorer was named North American Truck of the Year, pulling ahead of Chryslers Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango for the award. The show opens Jan. 15, but the press preview, expected to attract about 5,000 journalists (including TheStreet) from around the world, will take place Monday and Tuesday. Additionally, an investor conference, attended by many industry analysts, is scheduled for Tuesday. "The auto show has historically been an important touch point for how the companies are feeling about demand for the year, about how they see their fundamentals shaping up for the year," said ConvergEx Group strategist Nicholas Colas. "It focuses the market's attention dramatically, because every analyst and every investor sees every company for a week -- it's the whole industry in five calendar days." "Ford's ability to gain share in 2011 is a cornerstone of our buy rating and our more favorable view of the stock vs. GM(GM)," UBS analyst Colin Langan said in an equity research report published Monday. >>Ford to Hire 7,000 Workers in U.S. BorgWarner(BWA), however, was removed from UBS' key calls list after a strong run in share price performance.
